Book Review: The Board - A Winning Team By Herb Perry

Posted in Reviews by Kathleen Watkin on March 18th, 2013

“The Board: A Winning Team is a must read for every member of every board of directors of a non profit organization”

While published in 1990 (23 years ago!), the endorsement above is still true in 2013. A strong board is a crucial part of a successful museum.

At only 50 pages, this book is quick to read and easy to understand. It starts right at the basics of being on a board, such as how to orient new directors to their responsibilities and why it is important to familiarize them with the organization and its goals.

While this resource does not get into the legal aspects of running a non-profit organization (check out the Information Services Corporation at www.isc.ca for an ouline of the board's legal responsitibilites, however if you have any legal questions or concerns consult a lawyer), it does cover essentials such as how the board's authority should flow, how to conduct effective meetings, and voting and nominations.  If you need a quick overview on how a board should operate, this book is for you!
