Governor General’s History Awards

Canada's History is seeking nominations and applications for the Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Community Programming. This award recognizes community-based history projects that promote local perspectives of the past. Applications are evaluated on their impact, innovation, and contribution to a greater public understanding of Canadian history. If you know a community history project, we encourage you to submit a nomination or start an application today!

Applications are due on July 15, 2019.


Two recipients will receive $2,500 and a trip for two to Ottawa to attend the Governor General's History Awards, the Canada's History Forum, and the History Makers Gala.


All projects must be presented in Canada.
Projects must be supported by at least one recognized historical, municipal, or educational organization.
Eligible types of projects include: civic engagement activities, exhibits, multimedia, preservation projects, and public programming.
Projects must have occurred within the past 18 months prior to the close of nominations.
