WAPAHA SKA OYATE: LIVING OUR CULTURE, SHARING OUR COMMUNITY AT PION-ERA, 1955-69 Guest speaker: Dr. Elizabeth Scott, WDM Curator Whitecap Dakota First Nation (WDFN) is a Dakota community whose reserve lands are located 25 kilometers south of Saskatoon. Every summer from 1955 to 1969, Whitecap members participated in Pion-Era, the Western Development Museum (WDM) Saskatoon’s summer heritage show. Families set up a tipi camp, demonstrated cultural activities and livestock skills, educating visitors about Dakota life. For many years, this history had been all but lost at the WDM, but fondly remembered by the Whitecap participants and their descendants. Together in the spirit of Reconciliation and partnership, WDFN and the WDM have co-curated a new exhibit on their shared past, Wapaha Sk̄a Oyate: Living Our Culture, Sharing our Community at Pion-Era, 1955 – 69 a new permanent display at the WDM Saskatoon. WDM Curator Liz Scott will speak about the project and the exhibit in this virtual coffee club. Other upcoming sessions: - Holiday Traditions – December 20 More topics and dates coming soon!
