MAS is pleased to be a community partner for Curtain Razors presentation of Tommy and Père. We invite you to join us by purchasing tickets for this special in person MAS Community Chat, Saturday March 29th, 2:00pm.

A new script, with accompanying installation by Bundon Pfeifer Henderson, imagines a private meeting between Athol “Père” Murray and Tommy Douglas. This fictional encounter occurs during Saskatchewan’s bitter Doctors’ Strike in July 1962, when doctors refused to practice, hoping to enshrine their ability to determine fees and to deny patients who couldn’t pay. The strike lasted 22 days, resulting in the Saskatchewan Medical Care Insurance Act—the foundation of modern national healthcare.  Tommy and Père evokes the seething tension between opposing perspectives during those crucial 3 weeks in Saskatchewan.

ABOUT THE EVENT
An event in three acts

I. Installation – archival material gathered from research, ephemera from the Notre Dame Archives and the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan, an abundance of specific historical context, and the suggestion that “what is on the public record” is of crucial importance to the work’s central mystery.

II. 50 minute play

III. Public Discourse, where audiences will be invited to lend their voices to themed community conversations alongside featured guests.
