Technology Micro Grant for Community Museums

MAS is pleased to announce that the Government of Saskatchewan is once again providing funding support to the Saskatchewan museum sector by providing $45,000.00 to be used to assist with technological needs. The Ministry of Parks, Culture & Sport is working with MAS to ensure that this financial assistance is as widely accessible as possible. 

Grant Guidelines

The Technology Micro Grant for Community Museums will provide successful applicants with a grant of up to $1200.00. The applications will be adjudicated based on funds available and merit of the applicants outline of how the new equipment benefits the mandate and goals of the organization and how it supports the engagement of activities that contribute to their success and community wellbeing. 

Museums can use this funding to leverage other funding sources such as foundations, business contributions, or government programs (for example, the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Museums Assistance Program, the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, and the Canadian Museum of History’s Digital Museums Canada program). 

To be eligible for a technology microgrant, the museum needs to be a nonprofit organization or registered charity located in Saskatchewan that is open to the public that meets the definition of “museum” as laid out in Standards for Saskatchewan Museums

Eligible Expenses

The microgrants will cover up to $1200 in expenses for:

  • Computer or other technical equipment that will enhance the museum’s capacity for outreach and/or core museum functions such as programming and exhibits, including virtual (online) exhibits, and collections management/care. This would include equipment such as:
    • Computers, laptops, tablets, printers, scanners, monitors
    • Wireless internet upgrades
    • Cameras (still and video), audio recorders
    • Software required for using this equipment
  • The installation/preparation of the equipment, where museum staff and volunteers do not have the necessary expertise to do so

Final Report

Successful grant recipients will be required to submit a final report by October 30th 2023, which will include a final project budget, receipts of purchase, and a brief description of the impacts of the grant. 

Selection Criteria

Grants will be awarded to eligible museums on the following basis:

  • The project proposed will help the museum achieve its mandate
  • The project budget is complete, and the expenses are reasonable
  • The project proposal outlines the role of the equipment to be acquired in improving its capacity to engage and serve its community

Funder Acknowledgement

Museums receiving the grants will acknowledge the support of MAS as well as the Government of Saskatchewan, in accordance with its guidelines and policies.
